I Idolized Adulthood and Regret It

I (female, 23) have been running toward adulthood for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, there were things happening that I felt like I couldn’t do anything about, so all I wanted was to grow up. I wanted independence, my own place, a job, my own money. I thought adulthood was freedom.
The problem is, I spent most of my youth trying to be an adult without ever learning how to be a person.
I cannot save money to save my life. The longest I’ve ever saved was a few months, maybe a year. The last time I saved a decent amount, it only lasted six months because I was slowly spending it without replenishing it. The first time I got my own place, I had to give it up because of domestic violence. The first time I left home, I had to come back because I wasn’t ready for the world, not the way I thought I was.
They don’t tell you that when you leave home and go to another country, it’s not all rainbows and sunshine. And I’m not saying people didn’t warn me. I’m saying I didn’t listen.
So many people told me growing up to stop idolizing adulthood. They said once you get there, you’ll regret rushing it. You’ll want to go back and do it all over again, but you can’t. There are no do-ov

Without overthinking it, there’s a gap between the message and the outcome which is why the comments look the way they do Others will probably see it differently.
