CMV: Rap Music is holding back marginalized communities and promotes drugs, bigotry & violence.

Rap music has long been celebrated as a powerful form of artistic expression and a vehicle for marginalized voices to share their stories. It reflects the struggles, triumphs, and realities of communities often ignored by mainstream media. Many mainstream songs emphasize aggression, dominance, and “street credibility,” framing respect and success as the product of toughness or retaliation. While these themes often reflect real-life struggles and environments, their repeated glorification reinforces a culture where conflict is normalized and alternative paths to success are undervalued. Young listeners, looking for models of behavior, may internalize these messages, perpetuating cycles of interpersonal and community violence.
