My thesis is they (trump obviously but also the current faction of Republicans who control all the keys to power which includes many potential 2028 candidates) care about is staying in power now, but not beyond 2028. The midterms just need to be not catastrophic. The idea is permanently shifting the political/economic/power landscape is more powerful than one or two elections. There's dirt to do, and until Trump there has not been a president as willing to push the boundaries and have the base to survive it, so the main goal is to take advantage of the window now, not after 2028. There is no long term thinking, no decade long plan to "restore Monroe doctrine" or "economic nationalism". Those are just narratives used to gaslight to make it seem like all of this is done for some eventual greater good (which has a stabilizing effect at least in the short term since it preserves the base and leaves a lot of moderates confused of what to make of the situation).
